07 Apr Case Study: Training Trainers to Deliver High Quality Training Onsite
The problem laid out before our customer is one that is shared amongst many cleaning and maintenance companies: how do you deliver specific and targeted training to many different and diverse worksites? Each worksite may only have a couple of staff but with 40+ worksites are spread out, the logistics not to mention the time constraints can make training delivery appear impossible. Do you jump to online training to solve this problem?
Our customer needed a solution to deliver training that was specific and targeted to address safety issues on each particular worksite. Who better to deliver the training than those who really know the issues on each worksite – the supervisors. They were fully verse with the company’s health and safety policy, risk assessments and method statements. The missing link was the skill and knowledge to teach others in an effective and engaging way. Not just once, but to deliver regular training sessions, help to identify training needs and to be a crucial part of delivering consistency and quality to their customers.
To this end, we delivered onsite ‘train-the-trainer’ training around the UK to small cohorts of cleaner supervisors. We taught them how to:
- Identify specific and on-going training needs, from identifying root causes to individual and workplace needs assessments
- Design and create training sessions with deliverable lesson plans
- Design and deliver practical hands-on training sessions
- Use communication (written, spoken and body language) to great effect
- Evaluate and assess learning
How do the supervisors we are training put their health and safety knowledge into deliverable training sessions? After teaching them how to design and deliver practical based training sessions, we taught them the principles and practices of health and safety onsite and specifically how to deliver that content to their staff.
The outcome was a team of supervisors around the country, trained as trainer, who are capable of identifying needs, creating and delivering regular practical onsite training. This allows the company great flexibility to train their geographical diverse workforce as and when required, with the speed to identify and correct issues, and roll-out training in new methods and procedures.
